Meaning Clusters
In
the 1880s
Southern states
offered
large benefits
to
investors interested
in developing industries.
They
attempted
to
attract manufacturers
of
steel, lumber,
tobacco
and textile.
Disease
and child labor
afflicted
Southern
mill
towns.
Northern industries
continued
to boom.
The
percentage
of
Southern industries
in
comparison
with
national figures
remained
unchanged
from
1860 to 1900.
Thirty years
after
the Civil War,
the South remained
mostly
agrarian
and
financially dependent
on
the North.
Southern society
enforced
segregation
of
blacks and whites.
It also tolerated
racial
violence.
Some white Southerners
with
national government
positions
in Washington
resisted
Reconstruction.
Policies
in support
of
state authority
helped them maintain
white
dominance.
